Conceived in 1985, the Auto Expo debuted in 1986 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The 9 day show was a path-breaking event and a window for technology transfers, since it showed how the Indian Automotive industry was absorbing new technologies and promoting indigenous R&D for adapting these technologies for the rugged Indian conditions.
Over the years, the show grew from strength to strength and by 2006, it had begun to see new launches, concept vehicles, trade dialogues and huge overseas participation. In 2008, it was accredited by Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d'Automobiles (OICA), cementing its reputation as one of the world's most premier auto shows. Today, the Auto Expo is eagerly awaited by trade and fans alike, for the opportunities it affords for growth and a peek into the future.
